'Old Mary' Heavy Steam Crawler Crane
Old Mary" referred to by the workshop fitters who assembled it in the local railway yard from old decommissioned parts.
Steam cranes were often improvised machines, especially in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when contractors and railway workshops commonly built them by combining spare locomotive boilers, second-hand steam engines, old winches, and parts from damaged cranes. These hybrid, “cobbled-together” cranes were especially common on construction sites, small railways, docks, and canal works, where budgets were tight and purpose-built cranes from major manufacturers were too expensive. During wartime or urgent engineering work, the practice became even more widespread, with workshops assembling serviceable cranes from whatever equipment was available. Although rough and unstandardized, these improvised steam cranes were reliable enough to handle heavy lifting and remained in use for decades.
A double hook on a crane is a hook assembly with two hooks, often called a "double crane hook," "ramshorn hook," or "sister hooks". These are used for lifting unbalanced or very heavy loads, improving stability by distributing the weight evenly.
