Between 1908 and 1913, twenty-seven of the first 100 Holt caterpillar track-type tractors were used on the Los Angeles Aqueduct project, which provided a good proving ground for these machines.
 
They were widely used by the British, French and American armies in the First World War for hauling heavy artillery including the BL 9.2-inch howitzer and the BL 8-inch howitzer. 
The 8inch Howitzer artillery piece was  a fearsome weapon used in both World Wars.
 Designed by 'Vickers' and produced in mass by 4 of the largest weapon manufactures in the Britain. 
 They also equipped a small number of Australian and Canadian batteries in World War I and by the US Army in that war. They were also used in small numbers by other European armies.
 They delivered a 91kg shell up to ranges of 11km! The mobile unit itself weighed nearly 9 Tons."
